This diary is meant for supporters of former Sen. Edwards. I am not one, but I feel your pain (and please pardon the pun).

I can understand what you are going through. I went through that myself back in January 1998... when news about Monica Lewinsky first surfaced.

I had come to like and admire President Clinton. I had come to believe that his alleged infidelities were just right wing smears. I had come to believe that the latest allegations about him having "done an intern" (as Chris Mathews used to put it every night) was nothing but rumors being manufactured by the usual suspects.. and that he was really just taking a paternal interest in the young lady's career.

I sympathize with your anguish, your grief, your denial and your anger. You have every right to those emotions.

Personally, I believe he (Sen. Edwards) made a mistake, like we all do, and I would rather focus on the positive. He (Sen. Edwards) admits that he "started to believe that (I)he was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic"

That is an honest admission... even if it comes from a man who is 1% dishonest. Let us cut the man some slack for it... he has just admitted to something far worse than having an affair!

anyone's business, but I must disagree with complimenting him for coming clean after he knew he was caught, there isn't a lot of honor in that.

Well, by comparison, when Pres. Clinton was caught, he pontificated on the meaning of the word "is"

you're wrong on that --- and winger wrong. sorry. the clinton comparison is just out of LINE! there was no 'pontificating' but that's how FOX portrayed it. the 'is' was a legalise battle --- he was after all being tried in a court (Senate) and the 'is' was in a legal deposition. so buzz on that stupid remark!

I'm not ready to give him 3 cheers for anything. I won't trash him either. (Plenty of others doing that, and I ain't perfect myself....But I have never cheated on my wife in 23 years, or since I met her for that matter. I never called her a cunt or a trollop either while were on the subject.)

The guy is a scumbag. He was forced to admit it after months of lying, and they finally got proof on him and that is the only reason he admitted anything. 3 cheers? more like stay away from any public position.

Yes Bill Clinton cheated on his wife, and if he was caught in 96 instead of 98 he would have been a one term president. John Edwards is a liar that will say anything at anytime, he has no substance. His wife deserves better. This scum bag needs to stay the hell away from Denver.

He ran because he was egotistical and narcissistic... that is the only reason anyone ever runs for President, don't they ? Don't they all say that they can bring about change and make a difference, but they really mean that they are egotistical and narcissistic ?

As soon as I heard Bill Clinton deny the Lewinsky thing to Lehrer, I thought, "He probably did it." Through all the denials, I thought, he probably did it. I also thought everybody else probably realized it too. I JUST DID NOT CARE if he did it. I was more offended by the people trying to make me mad at Bill Clinton over his love life than I was at anything Bill Clinton did.

And I feel the same way about John Edwards, now. I thought there was a possibility it was true, when I heard the rumors the first time. I didn't discount them, but I thought, I really don't want to know all this.

I expect very little in the way of noble behavior from human beings when it comes to matters of love. I have never cheated on a spouse, but I have been cheated on by a spouse, and before I was married, I had quite a few flings with married women. My father cheated on my mother, and although I don't know for sure, I suspect my mom cheated on my Dad.

These are things that other people don't really deserve to judge. Oh, I'm sure Elizabeth Edwards has a right to judge, but we don't. I would have preferred that Edwards hadn't gone as far as he did with his campaign that I contributed to, knowing this could come out, but that's irrelevant now.

John Edwards wasn't my pick during the primary run, because I felt the wounding he took with Kerry in 2004 was too recent and too many issues would be brought up again from that difficult and unfortunate run.

Still, I admire the man very much and have always thought that his articulation of the "Two Americas" meme remains one of the best political strategies Democrats are still not drum-beating enough.

It should go, almost without saying, how much I personally admire Elizabeth Edwards and still wish for her complete recovery from cancer.

This additional pain and embarrassment she and their kids must be feeling now... I hope what should be a private matter amongst them is resolved with the best of outcomes for all.

There were many Edwards' supporters throughout the last few campaigns and this tragic revelation must disappoint them greatly.

Take heart, good Democrats. His better ideas got their sounding board and still influence our politics today.

People love to judge others, don't they? (2.00 / 1)

I've always been a big fan of John Edwards, and I still am. I wish he hadn't done this, but then, I'm not John Edwards, I haven't gone through what he's been through, under the pressures he's been under while he went through them, so I don't see how I can judge fairly.
I wish we all could be a little more willing to hold back from casting stones. How many of us have lives we'd be happy having put out before the world, with scandal chasing rags sniffing through our trash cans and peering through our bedroom windows?
He ran for president because he thought he could do some good, he thought he could win and he, as he himself said, got a little arrogant and narcissitic. I still think he could have won and I still think he would have made the best president. Sure I might be wrong, but that's what I believe.
And now we find out he sinned. Well, so have I. I haven't cheated on my wife, and I hope I never do, but I'm not so sure of my saintliness (unlike many who have chimed in on Edwards) that I know I never will. I'll be tempted, I know that, and I hope I'll have the strength to withhold. If not, then I only hope my wife will forgive me. But while I haven't cheated on my wife, I've sinned in other ways. Who hasn't?
All you holier than thou stone casters out there, you've never sinned? You've never done something you wish you hadn't, or said something you wish you could take back? I don't care if you're not running for president, or if you aren't in the public eye, so maybe you think it "doesn't count". You still don't have the right to stand in judgement and condemn him.
And don't get going about how you're not pissed off about the affair, but rather about the "hypocrisy". He's not a hypocrite, he's just a person, like all of us. He never tried to tell all of us how to live our lives in the bedroom or made sex and marriage into his political issues, the way Newt Gingrich or David Vitter or Henry Hyde did. THEY are hypocrites.
John Edwards? Well, he's just human.
Lay off him.
