Overnight Open Thread

Prayers for those in Florida, Cuba, and Haiti tonight, preparing for a hurricane.

On a lighter note, will Michael Phelps win his eighth gold medal tomorrow night?

Discuss.

Mccain would be making his VP announcement on Aug 29 ( a day after Obama delivers his acceptance speech in Colorado ) in Dayton , Ohio and he would pick
Rob Portman who would shut down the " Conservative unhappiness " with Mccain both on the economic and social front.

The man is an excellent debater , a fiscal conservative , a methodist and has a great family.

Also a Dartmouth alum. Good stuff there. But, Portman said he hasn't turned over any papers to McCain's vetting team, so at this point I'm figuring if there's a dark horse, it's Cantor. My money's still on Pawlenty, though.

Re: Overnight Open Thread (none / 0)

Cantor is possible but I am convinced it would be Rob Portman .

I don't think it would be that hard to vet the guy , I am not sure he even needs to turn in any papers , he has probably been thoroughly vetted by the Bush administration and the RNC and Mccain can just look to them for the papers .

However I am hearing a lot of local chatter in Tennesee about Rob Portman that has become impossible to dismiss.

Cantor is Jewish (none / 0)

The fundies would freak out.  They're not for pluralism.  They don't even like McSame, and he converted to Baptist. They really disliked Romney.

there are approx 25 jews serving in Congress, only 1 is a republican (cantor).  They don't recruit, much less elect, jews.

Hell, if ya ain't white and male, chances are you not getting a call from trent lott's party.

There are 96 women in congress, only 25 are goopers.

McCain not a Baptist (none / 0)

TV report yesterday that he attends a Baptist Church with his wife but not officially a member, whatever that takes.

fiscal conservative = borrow and spend gooper (none / 0)

the deficit is now $482 billion, thanks in part to Portman's "fiscal conservatism."

Re: Overnight Open Thread (2.00 / 2)

By the way in terms of debates , Obama better quickly get some prep , I know this is a different forum but I don't get the sense he has really improved much from the primaries .

His answers are still long winded like it was in the primary , Mccain is not half as good as Clinton but his answers had some clarity and straighforwardness.

I'm Sorry to say (none / 0)

McCain crushed Obama in the debate tonight. If Obama doesn't improve, McCain will win the general election.

McCain may suprise us by picking Meg Whitman as his VP choice.

Re: I'm Sorry to say (none / 0)

The debates are one reason I'm sticking with my prediction of a 6-8% McCain win.

A lot of lefties out there just don't get how bad a candidate Obama is.

I'm Not Going to Go that Far (none / 0)

Obama has a huge wind behind his back. But Republicans do have better intuition on how to persuade people. I think it's because Democrats are caught up in "The Age of Enlightenment."

As of right now, I think this election most resembles the 1960 election.

He's so bad, he beat a Clinton!

Seriously, give it a rest.  Obama is a great candidate and he'll do just fine.

This isn't me being a "lefty."  It's me looking at a consistent Obama lead in polls and his ability to beat one of the most experienced pols out there.  Those are facts right there, not wishes.

I guess it's a "Primary Colors" thing (none / 0)

if a Dem didn't like Obama in the primaries, then they're probably not going to like him afterwards.  Sure they want him to win, but liking someone is a different emotion.

Take four years ago, Dean and Clark voters supported Kerry in the general (they really wanted him to win), but a significant portion never warmed up to him.

Debate performances are psychologically graded on a curve (ie expectations).  Expectations were so low for Bush in 2000, people were surprised that he did fall down.  Then the tables were turned in 2004.  The GOP couldn't help themselves and the derided Kerry wiped shrub out.  This can also be said of Reagan in 1980 (too old, too mean, B-movie actor) who allayed fears by being amiable.

McSame has been so bad on the stump (montana biker rally), in front of a telepromter (new orleans lime-green speech), in interviews (ABC's ThisWeek, in pressers (cheese-please), not to mention completely boring at town hall meetings (Fox NYC town hall), that people were probably expecting a another disaster.  He benefited by simply preforming better than the cheese-aisle ramble in front of a home-court audience (abortion bad YEA!!).

Thank God For Canadian TV (none / 0)

Thank God I got cable TV just a couple of weeks ago. NBC does not carry the Olympics live on the West Coast, but Canadian TV does.

Re: Thank God For Canadian TV (none / 0)

NBC delaying the broadcast of the olympics on the west coast has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

Seconds after Phelps et al. won it was all over the Internet.  Even on msnbc.com.

Obama's debate performances (2.00 / 1)

are excellent if you are looking at it from the perspective of a transcript.  The "professorial" style comes off better on paper but not so great live.

Whether we like or not, who wins or loses a debate often depends on who made the best one-liner or who made the best facial expression.  One-liners aren't Obama's style unfortunately as I can only remember one great one-liner that he had in the 20 or so debates: the "I look forward to you advising me one day Hillary" line was pretty darn good.  Obama is the superior candidate compared to McCain when it comes to substance but I think we're naive to believe substance is what wins debates.

Obama needs to add the style and flair he shows on the stump and in his speeches to his debating.

Re: Overnight Open Thread (none / 0)

McCain is an angry old idiot..
During the first debate he will shake his finger at
Obama and shout "Get off my lawn!"

This week in Colorado McCain said the dumbest thing any candidate for any office could say in Colorado

Even if they wire him for the debates like they did
McCain will blow it..Obama will jab..jab..until McCain explodes..

Prayers for those in Florida, Cuba, and Haiti tonight, preparing for a hurricane.

I know you meant this in the nicest possible way. But do you ever think about what you are saying? (I know you are religious, but that doesn't absolve you from the obligation to think.)

Do you mean, "I fear for those people, my fellow human beings, and I wish them the best" or do you mean "I hope nothing happens to anyone from the hurricane" or do you really mean what you say: "Let's try for Divine Intercession so that the All Powerful Being who could have stopped this and maybe even caused it as part of His Plan will change His Mind"?

If you don't mean the latter, then why say it unless it was just an inaptly worded platitude or a wish? Because when you use language like that and mean something else it pollutes the general discourse.

I know this sounds curmudgeonly, but it's time we stopped mouthing this kind of stuff.

Re: Overnight Open Thread (none / 0)

No, actually, I was taught as a child to never think about what I say. Thinking is highly overrated. It's for the birds. That look before you leap stuff? Rubbish. Run your mouth and then think about it later, I always say; better to reflex then reflect.

I had it removed because of a personality clash. I wish her well but don't need the additional baggage she brings. I don't have time for drama queens but I do respect her work. I find her too high maintenance.

Cancelled!!! (none / 0)

Obama's swing to Florida on Saturday has been cancelled because of the impending weather that looks like it won't reach Tampa or Orlando until Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Event was to be in Clearwater west of and coastal to Tampa.

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?

Re: McCain's "cross in the dirt" story. (none / 0)

I'm inclined to believe McCain. I'm going on memory hear, but I recall something about the first Christians drawing fishes in the dirt during casual conversation; if the other person replied with a fish, they'd know they were safe, and if not, then don't mention your religion, it's a Roman. The Bible itself has Jesus drawing in the dirt to distract the  Pharisees while the woman they were trying to harass got dressed in the "he who has not sinned cast the first stone" story. So, drawing religious symbols in the dirt goes back a long way, and a cross is one of the most common Christian symbols. I'll give Big Mac the benefit of the doubt here.
