Who's to blame for the Ark. Shooting?

I'm somehow a mix of "livid" and "numb" regarding the shooting at the Arkansas Democratic Party Headquarters right now. We don't know the motive of the assailant yet -- we don't know if Gwatney was the target for reasons other than his role in the state party.

But didn't we just go through this last month a guy killed two people at Unitarian churchfor it being "too liberal?"

We don't know if this is the same thing. But it is far too easy to imagine the motive. Because for some reason, conservatives love the idea of Democrats being shot. Oh, not all do. And those that publically call for it claim to just make a "joke" of it. Like those "Liberal Hunting Permit" that Dave Neiwart cited recently in a post about conservative "eliminationism". Neiwart collected a disturbing, but media-ignored list of major conservative voices calling for the death of Americans they disagree with. Here are a few:

Rush Limbaugh: "I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus -- living fossils -- so we will never forget what these people stood for."

Stop the ACLU [post since removed]:

Rope + Tree + ACLU Lawyer = Pinata

Ann Coulter: "We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens' creme brulee. ... That's just a joke, for you in the media."

Melanie Morgan: "A great deal of good could be done by arresting Bill Keller having him lined up against the wall and shot."

Lee Rogers: "[T]he day will come when unpleasant things are going to happen to a bunch of stupid liberals and it's going to be very amusing to watch."

Bill O'Reilly: They ought to hang this Soros guy.

Whatever happened to the crime of yelling "fire" in a crowded theater? I know there's a fundimental right of these blowhards calling for the death of their so-called enemies (re: us) but where do you draw the line? The recent NRA wallet-sized handout saying that Obama will take away everyone's guns, perhaps?

In it, they state "never in NRA's history have we faced a presidential candidate -- and hundreds of candidates running for other offices -- with such a deep-rooted hatred of firearm freedoms." Surely that won't inflame people with guns, ironically since they must be confusing the gun-quiet Obama with another candidate.

But the most disgusting account I can imagine is an upcoming one. Pandagon links to a review of an upcoming "conservative comedy" called An American Carol about an irresponsible unamerican filmmaker modeled after Michael Moore who is visited by 3 ghosts who turn him conservative.

Amidst 9/11 jokes and various moralizations about what it means to be an America, comes this nugget:

In a scene that Sokoloff described, but didn't bring, Patton and his soldiers storm a courthouse that's about to remove the Ten Commandments and start opening fire on the people trying to stop them. "You can't shoot these people!" Malone says. "They're not people!" says Patton. "They're the ACLU!" At this point we see that the ACLU members are unkillable George Romero zombies.

It's always important to dehumanize your enemies, especially if you're looking to get them shot. (See: "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder", "Obama Nation" and "Unfit for Command" for other examples of how 'dem librals ain't like us.)

I'm sure an endorsement of violence is not what irresponsible filmaker David Zucker is endorsing by showing just that in his film about how unamerican and, apparently, inhuman Liberals are. Maybe he'll be visited by 3 ghosts and learn the error of having a fake mass shooting of liberals at a time in which people seem to be doing that on their own accord.

Sure, he's protected by the First Amendment. But during a crucial in the film, the Michael Moore charactor is faced with the carnage of 9/11 (hilarious!) and told that those deaths are on his hands because of "freedom of speech, which you abuse."

If fake Michael Moore's abusive use of freedom (as Atrios suggests, that's truly a conservative logistical stretch) makes him responsible 9/11 deaths, somehow -- is real David Zucker, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, et al. responsible for the deaths at the Unitarian Church and the shooting today in Arkansas?

Will they even notice?

UPDATE: I forgot one of the most egregious examples, House minority leader John Boehner's call for the American people to "hang" House Speaker Pelosi. He's yet to apoligize for that statement.

If it turns out to be a politically-based shooting, I would love to see a boycott of this horrible sounding film. Although that may be what they're hoping for for publicity. Disgusting, though not surprising.

The guy who pulled the trigger? (2.00 / 1)

We don't know anything about the shooter yet.  It's just as likely that this is someone with some kind of personal beef as it is that this is politically motivated at this point.

Let's hold off until we've got more information.

Re: The guy who pulled the trigger? (none / 0)

The point of this isn't so much that this particular shooting may be directed at Democrats -- its that so much of conservative discourse these days seems to be directed at violence towards Democrats.

Re: The guy who pulled the trigger? (2.00 / 1)

The point is valid, but I don't think this is necessarily the event that should spark the discussion until we know more about the facts.  There have been enough acts - and threats - of violence from the far right that I think a case can be made without the risk of jumping the gun on this situation.

Oh man,

I wonder how the media will cover armed guards stationed outside every DNC office to protect us from RNC-fueled killers.

I guess Libaugh's chickens are coming home to roost.

Also let me state how mad I am at Jerome.

I expressed my fear that the Anti-christ Meme that preachers and rightwing bloggers is not funny to Christian Extremists.

Jerome "LOL"d me and did not even recognize that meme or the danger it produced.

Okay, the man is dead now.

Not even headline on Huffington post.

A shame, this man will die with no honor as a public servant.

The media doesn't care, and the Democrats barely do either.

Liberals are at the receiving end of two violent attacks by extremists and we take it in stride.

Re: Who's to blame for the Ark. Shooting? (2.00 / 2)

Just realized I should add the Bohner statement about "hanging" Pelosi. How they get away with comments like that blows my mind. FYI - Not literally.

Could it be (2.00 / 1)

our culture of guns and violence?

Could it be this same culture of guns and violence promoted, pushed and used by the right wing media and talking heads?

I truly do hate them all.

Re: Who's to (2.00 / 1)

I agree that is is too early to determinen blame but i also agree that the hannity/couter/BILLO crowd go to far and IMHO promoter narratives that viewers could easily read as it is ok to bully and even injure liberals.

Re: Who's to (2.00 / 1)

If it was a shooting at some right winger location, i don't think there would be much of a wait in the anger toward liberals. I'm not knocking restraint, but let's face it, there's a pattern.

There is a larger issue -- somehow guns, war, violence etc. became Right Wing issues a while back. Was it the 80s when the Rambo image of the GOP was being pushed? This idea that the Republicans alone own gun owners through NRA advocacy makes some sense -- the Democrats are and were more likely to propose legislation limiting firearm proliferation -- but somehow with the NRA came all the bluster and bullets. The bombing of abortion clinics -- the bombing of the Murrah building... these too, are owned by the Right Wing.

Is there any effort in the Right Wing to stem this?

Re: Who's (2.00 / 1)

And while i am on this topic how many remember when Clinton was president and Sen Helms suggestted that he (Clinton) would not be safe if he visited a military base in NC.  I am just saying the right has a long history of this kind of stuff.  But when somthing happens it the same old "what me worry".

Re: Who's to blame for the Ark. Shooting? (2.00 / 4)

Oh, it goes far, far beyond specific incidents. There are so many factors responsible it's hard to decide which to choose from. Reagan and his conservatives implanted the idea that government was a serious problem. Fundamentalist Christianity got more and more linked to politics until it began directly equating conservativism and all its platforms to faith and worship. Limbaugh, Hannity and the like began to attack the left daily and serve as a platform for hate to grow and grow and grow by being not only tolerated, but rewarded and fed.

But if I had to blame one group the most, the conservative media would have to be it. Not only do they encompass all the things I mentioned, they do so on a daily basis. They have turned the sort of madness believed by Timothy McVeigh into catchy headlines and ideas delivered on a handy ticker while talking about politics in moral and religious terms.

If this is only the start of more to come, who will accept responsibility? Who will be the first to call out to their listeners and say, "NO, this is NOT what I stand for"? Who will be the first to acknowledge the nagging guilt that undoubtedly reaches the soul they have so desperately tried to cage in cynicism?

Re: Who's to blame for the Ark. Shooting? (none / 0)

There are too many unknown facts to say who is to blame at this point.  But it is a question that needs to be answered in the weeks and months to come.

In the Middle East when some crazy guy listens to an extremist and then becomes a suicide bomber, we tend to focus our attention on the extremist who inspired the action.

So I want to know who Johnson listened to on TV and radio.  I want to know who he read (presuming that he read).  If this was in fact a political assassination, I want to know who inspired it.

Hey guys, please take a moment to e-mail the Arkansas Democratic party and tell them that you're thinking of them and their Chairman.
