Leslie Byrne is seen as unfriendly to Hispanic interests

Leslie Byrne voted against NAFTA.  She now has Sen. Webb's support, the senator who voted for one of the amendments that scuttled the immigration bill.  My suspicion is that she does not support the immigration bill that failed.  On this basis alone, I think her claim to that she fights for the less deserving is overrated. She relies on union support, people who have suffered under the current regime, but their misery pales in comparison with what immigrants have to suffer in Virginia.  And she is seemingly willing to keep it at that.  Gerry Connolly, on the other hand, took a tough stance against anti-immigration bashing in Northern Virginia. It is my sense that Connolly is friendlier towards Hispanic issues than Byrne. Both are solid campaigners and very friendly.  Both are also quite accessible.  And Both would be good congressmen. And I still support Sen. Webb, despite his immigration stance, because he is the best Virginia can offer for the job. But the same cannot be stated for Byrne.

Good point! Connolly has done a nice job of keeping Fairfax County from becoming what Prince William has become - xenophobically anti-immigrant.

He has done a very good job as chairman, while maintaining a high popularity rating. He will have an easier time taking the seat than Byrne, who has proven to be less than an electoral dynamo...

I don't see how you can say immigrants would oppose her because of something Webb did. She endorsed him, that doesn't mean she is responsible for everything he does.

The reason immigrants might not support her is her very stupid proposed legislation during her term as State Senator:
Wikipedia

In the Senate of Virginia she sponsored legislation to prohibit people from sleeping in rooms except bedrooms, a bill that led many to question Byrne's grasp of the important issues facing Virginians.
(warning this Wikipedia article is obviously written by a Republican and anti-Byrne individual)

Most immigrants either don't know about this or have forgotten. However, if immigrant activists remind their communities it will go against her.

I remember that "occupancy" bill Byrne supported. It received national attention at the time and she was forced to retract it, IIRC.
