MySpace and MTV and McCain in Manchester - 7PM Eastern

McCain is the first (and may end up the only) Republican to appear on MTV/MySpace's interactive forum.- Todd

myspace-badgeDisclosure: MySpace is paying my travel
MANCHESTER-Following John Edwards and Barack Obama, tonight (7PM eastern) John McCain will be the first Republican candidate to participate in a MySpace/MTV interactive forum.

It should be an interesting night. On one had, New Hampshire's same day registration provision allows candidates on both sides of the aisle potential for a youth surge not showing up in the polls -- which could be a substantive boost in the expectations spin. For McCain specifically, he has been bleeding market share in the MySpace friends primary. I'll be looking to the interactive perspective as it fascinates me. What do you think I should be looking for during the event?

Some pics, I'll be posting live pics here:

It is cold and snowing:

Does the national political press demand lodging that includes multiple line phones no matter where they are doing business?

Bob, what's the crowd like? Young obviously, but I wonder if they're filling it with Republicans and Independents in particular or is it just an unfiltered college crowd?

Young and mixed.

Sitting with Joshua Levy...updates after the jump.

Q1 - McCain vs. GOP on how they deny climate change. Aggressive answer guided towards non-deniers.

Q2 - Moderator Chris Cillizza explains feedback process asked what McCain's closing messsage is -- flub with McCain momentarily forgetting that Saddam Husein isn't much of a threat since he was deposed and executed and such

Lots of greek logos. He's answering a question on the economy, suggests we need to stop spending.

Q4 "What are you doing to bring home our soldiers?"

Answer, he's working to continue surge. Doesn't seem to be resonating with the crowd. "The strategy is succeed." "I can tell you this new strategy is succeeding." One form of the word 'success' 7 times?

If we don't succeed, they will follow us home -> genocide?

Won't ask for a show of hands on who is for/against the war.

he used the "follow us home" trope again? this guy's unbelievable. and he's one of the "very serious" people.

Instant response shows the scare tactic isn't working anymore.

For those watching on MTV, I'm sure you can see that crowd is starting to look a little bored.

Q5 Shortage of troops. Draft???

All volunteer army is having success. Looking around the facial expressions of a room full of college kids, it doesn't look like he's getting any traction.

If you check the feedback, it is clear he is tanking when it comes to Iraq.

Re: MySpace and MTV and McCain in Manchester - 7PM (none / 0)

Best applause when he was asked whether he'd be opposed to having that bitch Hillary Clinton serve as VP and said no.

Yet then he said he wouldn't have Clinton and would need somebody with similar views. When he said, "no" to "would he oppose" -- the audience clapped when he answered the question when that wasn't what he meant. Clear disconnect there.

Re: MySpace and MTV and McCain in Manchester - 7PM (none / 0)

The format seems to allow some insight from those at home as to how the crowd is been moving back in and forth with the answers. The is a far larger crowd at home voting on myspace (I think Joshua Levy and Chris Cillizza and I are the only ones in the room with computers), but it is interesting to be getting two different sets of feedback concurrently. I'm looking forward to writing a full debrief.

Extra Innings (none / 0)

Nice, McCain asked for more time and couldn't get it on MTV, but is doing more for the crowd and online.

Cillizza's spin is that McCain improved tonight (again, with same day registration--could be important).

McCain seems to have warmed up to the format and is extremely relaxed now (maybe because he's sitting, it was getting pretty hot in here will 11 racks of lights).

Final bonus question - Outsourcing (none / 0)

Says he can't bring back jobs, training and education for second chance.

Another question on Iraq via IM. Again, more with the follow us home fearmongering.

McCain is doing yet another question: immigration.
